Timeline of Women in Japanese Heavy Metal and Hard Rock
#1
I've been piecing this together sporadically since the start of the site, but I feel it's got enough content to actually post it here finally. Here's a list of Japanese female-fronted and all-female hard rock and heavy metal bands by year. If you see a band who existed prior to the date they're posted on this timeline, such as Saber Tiger or Blues Creation, it means they existed beforehand with only male members, and the date on the timeline is when they added a female musician, even though they may not necessarily still have one today.

This list spans from (minimum) hard/progressive rock bands through the various styles of heavy metal. Also included are bands who only have a female instrumentalist, or female-fronted bands that include at least one other female musician, but the rest of the band is male.

I will update the list in this thread as necessary, I thought it could be an interesting resource for peoples research. Throw any names that are missing (or errors) at me in the comments and I'll add/fix them, just be sure to stick with hard/prog rock and heavy metal. Also accepted are bands like Exist Trace, Yousei Teikoku, and Danger Gang, but try not to go further into alternative metal than that.

What means what:
[1] = Female-fronted bands.
[2] = All-female bands.
[3] = Bands which only include(d) a female instrumentalist.
[4] = Female-fronted bands which include(d) at least one other female band member, while the rest are men.
* denotes approximate formation year.

Some more female-fronted bands:
- Asriel (formed 2006)
- Rokugen Alice (formed 2006)
- Imperial Circus Dead Decadence (formed 2007)
- Emiru no Aishita Tsukiyo ni Dai San Gensoukyoku wo (formed 2011)
- Schönberg (not sure when they formed, first release was in 2011)

Octaviagrace should be purple (female-fronted + female guitarist), not red.

Secilia Luna (formed 2007) had a female bassist.

Matenrou Opera's first keyboardist was a woman, but considering that she left the band just a few months after they started and Matenrou Opera has been an all-male band ever since, that's more of an obscure trivia fact than anything. They only recorded two singles with her and one of them was live-only.

That's enough to point them out though in this scenario. That's an interesting piece of trivia indeed. Oh

I'll add the rest right now.

I was just going through my music library and control-F'ing what isn't here. I didn't do melodeath yet, but I'm sure I could dredge up some.

I appreciate it, I just figured this could be a simple resource for people interested in maybe finding some female-fronted/all female bands, seeing as it's such a popular scene in Japan this day and age.

Any hope that you could change the all-female bands in a color with better contrast... They're all but unreadable against the blue background, lol
Maybe orange or a different blue?

Oh are you on mobile? On my PC your orange looks too close to the red and the light blue is almost invisible lol. Hang on, I'll play around with it to find a better color.

Edit: How is the super dark purple?

I do not recommend colors at all, especially with some of the choices up above -- those clash immediately with our other themes. Rather, bold, italic, and underline could be utilized, and potentially in a combination of sorts.

How does this look?
