Merry - For Japanese Sheeple (April 17, 2019)

Oh man I didn't expect them to actually say "for Japanese sheeple" at the end there. This is comedy gold. Laugh

Short clip for 'Toxicosis Island':

Doesn't really show much more than the trailer, but at least I like what I'm hearing.

Holy crap! We're actually getting the full video clip!

I wonder who wrote this one. Tetsu's bass is fairly prominent, but Kenichi usually writes the lead tracks and he's more or less been their main songwriter for the last few albums as well.

Just finished my first playthrough of the whole thing. Took forever to arrive, thank you very much Dutch customs. First off, I'm very glad to hear the band continue the more retro leanings of the last two albums. Without dismissing the somewhat heavier stuff they did, this is the Merry I liked in the first place. There's a very strong melancholic vibe throughout the mini-album, with even some subtle folky touches on 'Sheeple', but it's still quite propulsive and rhythmic, though Nero's drums are notably less prominent in the mix than they usually are.

The slightly symphonic J-rock approach of the last album's title track is continued on 'Saigo no Bansan', though considerably less hyperactive. It loses a few points for the completely pointless 7 minutes of silence the track closes with. It doesn't even make sense, because the Miya (MUCC) remix of 'Sheeple' is listed on the track listing, so it's not even a hidden bonus track. For the time it actually has sound, 'Saigo no Bansan' is one of Merry's most elegant songs to date.

Calling this a mini-album is a bit of a stretch, because if you subtract those minutes of silence, I have singles that last longer than this one, but it's really good for sure.

Oh yeah, the CD+DVD version has absolutely bonkers packaging as well. It's all in a clear jewel case with no booklet or inlay, it does have a fold-out obi card thing with all the lyrics and credits in it. The discs themselves act as the art work and there's an actual piece of Fuji film negative with a sheep on it included.

Watched the bonus dvd this morning, definitely some of their best live work. A surprisingly stable performance from Gara as well.
