[Math Rock] PENs+
#1
They are basically an emo/post-hardcore/math rock group. The good news is that there's no whiny bullshit, and it's actually fun! They're a really young band, but they are full of potential. So far they have two mini-albums and a single, but all of it has really good instrumental work. I'm hoping they keep developing, because I love everything they've done.

It looks like they put their old release, soccer, back in print on bandcamp.

Any love for arigarnon friends? They're 有賀麻生 (Ariga Mao)'s new band, and carry on the good work of PENs+ during their hiatus.

Haven't heard of them before personally, but they actually sound pretty dang good. Welcome to the forum, by the way. Smile

I haven't heard of them either actually but it's not bad at all.

The image of the schoolgirl at the bus stop is pretty lulz.

Truth be told, I wasn't even aware PENs+ was technically on hiatus. Well at least they reprinted their old single, soccer a while back and their twitter page seems active. I'll need to grab that arigarnon friends EP off of bandcamp when I get a chance. Hopefully they can do a physical release sometime soon.

It's all quite sad. As far as I can tell, they were not really active for their last year as undergraduates, and then they split up once they graduated. Arai Rio moved to Canada to be a graphic designer, and occasionally does gigs in North America under the name “PENs+ solo”. Ariga Mao went on to form arigarnon friends, and I don't know what the other two are doing. On Twitter, they claimed something like “it would take a struggle for us to reform”.

BTW, do you/anyone know about their split with Leer earlier this year?

All I know is that it's only on vinyl which pisses me off a little bit (Low-Pass and Mirror have a vinyl-only split too).
