Well damn it's happening.

Quote:Miracle collaboration between LUNA SEA and Music Producer Steve Lillywhite CBE

Steve Lillywhite CBE, a Grammy award winning music producer who has worked with U2, Peter Gabriel, The Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, Morrissey, Thirty Seconds to Mars, and many more, is currently working with LUNA SEA’s on their 10th Album as Co Producer and Mix Engineer, to be released in December.

This is big news in entertainment for 2019.

LUNA SEA celebrates its 30th anniversary since the band was formed. LUNA SEA is a super band active at the forefront without ever changing members and the band plans to release the 10th album to be commemorated in their 30th anniversary (two years from the previous work "LUV"). The news of Steve Lillywhite's participation is truly exciting for the band.

When I heard about this story from one of the members, I could hardly believe the news. Steve Lillywhite has never been involved in producing a Japanese artist, and is still very much in demand from first class artists in the world. So I thought there might not be a possibility to have him work with any Japanese artists.

Before I write about how this miracle collaboration came true, I would like to briefly look back on Steve Lillywhite's accomplishments.

Lillywhite entered the music industry in 1972, when he worked as a tape operator for Polygram.
He produced a demo recording for Ultravox, which led to them being offered a recording contract with Island Records. His first commercial success came in August 1978 as the producer of "Hong Kong Garden," the debut single from Siouxsie and the Banshees.

In February 1980 the Psychedelic Furs' self-titled debut album was released, produced by Lillywhite. He also produced Peter Gabriel's critically acclaimed third solo album Peter Gabriel (also known as III or Melt), which was released in May 1980 and topped the UK album chart. It established Gabriel as "one of rock's most ambitious, innovative musicians" and "raised considerably" Lillywhite's profile.

During the recording of the album he pioneered (with Gabriel and engineer Hugh Padgham) the gated reverbdrum sound which became a hallmark of Phil Collins' solo career. Later in the year, Boy, the debut album of U2, was released, produced by Lillywhite. Lillywhite's collaboration with U2 continued with the albums October andWar.

Besides this, in the 80's, he also produced XTC "Black Sea" (1980), Rolling Stones "Dirty Work" (1986) and Talking Heads "Naked" (1988) and many more.

And even in the 90's, Steve's success didn’t stop. He also worked on The La’s 'The La’s”(1990) and Phish 'Billy Breathes' (1996).

Steve Lillywhite, whose talent has not diminished since the 2000s, has been involved in artists and works that symbolize the era, such as MGMT and Thirty Seconds to Mars. In addition, he worked with U2 again on "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" (2004), and led the album to the best album award at the Grammys.

It was INORAN the guitarist, who opened the door of a miracle collaboration with a global producer and LUNA SEA. The details of the process are unknown, but I remember INORAN uploaded the photo with Lillywhite a while ago. It seems that their relationship led to an exchange between Lillywhite and LUNA SEA. As mentioned earlier, Lillywhite, who has not produced any Japanese artists, said that he was interested in LUNA SEA’s music after listening to their albums. You might also not know that all the members of LUNA SEA are big U2 fans. They, of course, know his name but never thought he would work with them. However, the members visited Lillywhite and Lillywhite also came to see LUNA SEA Saitama Super Arena show in 2017, with mutual respect for each other, Lillywhite's participation in the album production was finally confirmed.

LUNA SEA are not a band that works under someone else’s direction. They have had a strategy making their own sound to date and they have never had any producer on their albums. So it’s very curious how they produce their album with Lillywhite. According to a related member of the band’s team, the members actively handed over their demo to Lillywhite, and recorded based on Steve’s advice and opinions.

When I recently interviewed J, the bassist, J said, "The next album will definitely be a trigger to start our next chapter in the history for LUNA SEA, and I am thrilled with the new chapter going this way."

In other words, with the 30th anniversary, LUNA SEA’s 10th album will finally make the band world-focused, and conscious of presenting to Rock fans around the world. LUNA SEA has decided to raise their game.

The collaboration between world-class producer Steve Lillywhite and LUNA SEA, has created a unique sound. It makes us very excited and we can’t wait until the album is released!

Well, it can't be worse than LUV.

Peter Gabriel's third album was a masterpiece, so I'm hoping for something along those lines Wink

Also, concerning "you might also not know that all the members of Luna Sea are big U2 fans"... Couldn't anyone have guessed that after hearing 'Shine'? Wink

Oh I just realized that this is supposed to come out in December. LUV came out in December as well so now I'm worried all over again...

I doubt if Lillywhite would allow the same amount of crap as on 'Luv' though.

I guess the worst case scenario is a U2 2.0 (3.0 if you count Shine I guess) album. Still better than Luv.

My mom's a huge U2 fan, so I'm sort of accustomed to the sound Tongue Lillywhite does seem like the kind of guy that has some producer's pride, in the sense that he doesn't want to be associated with products that are not the absolute best of what was possible at the time. LEt's hope for the best.

The single was pretty good. I just don't like how nasal Ryuichi's voice appears to be becoming lately, but if the songs are good, I'm pretty sure I can stomach that.

I actually like 80s U2 and a couple of albums after that (namely "Actung Baby" and "All That You Can't Leave Behind.") I don't think they've made an interesting song since "City of Blinding Lights" off of their 2004 album though.

That's probably my favorite song off of 'How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb', yeah. That one or 'A Man and a Woman'. Anyway, Lillywhite did that album, 'Boy', 'October' and 'War' with U2, so at least that's their good stuff Wink

Also, it's quite impossible to hate U2 if you like Luna Sea. The similarities are simply too big Laugh

Very interesting. LUV was disappointing, but I like all of their other albums. This last year I also explored U2's music more thoroughly, from their 80s work to their more recent work. I am probably one of the few people who like 'Songs of Innocence,' lol.

I can definitely hear U2's influence in Luna Sea's music, and I don't think its a bad thing. It seems Lillywhite also worked on my favorite Guster album, 'Lost and Gone Forever.' After looking at a list of albums he's produced, I wonder if this album will be even less rock oriented than LUV. I'm sure December will be here before we know it.
