IRONBUNNY - 鉄槌のオルタナティブ (August 28, 2019)
#1
Well, I've been keeping a sort of skeptical eye on this one for a bit, but when they dropped a new MV in the last day and announced the guests on their debut forthcoming mini-album, I thought it was worth a thread.

IRONBUNNY is a Japanese guitarist who hides his identity behind a 特撮 (tokusatsu) metal hero persona. On the weekly show Rock, Rocker, Rockest they've been grooming some young idol girls to be the frontwomen for a new heavy metal group, simply called IRONBUNNY. I wasn't all that impressed by the debut MV from a few weeks ago, but they put up a new Live MV (technically, studio recording, live footage) with a special introduction by none other than Doug Aldrich.

The debut mini-album, 鉄槌のオルタナティブ "Tettsui no Alternative" is coming out on Avex on the 28th. The following guest artists will appear:
  • Doug Aldrich
  • Warren DeMartini
  • George Lynch

Perhaps some of you know who this IRONBUNNY really is, but he's obviously very heavily involved in the international guitar world.

Here's the new MV with intro by Doug:

And here's the debut video from a few weeks ago:

At the Official YouTube Channel they have a weekly 30-minute show that's a sort of rock clinic where they dissect vintage albums (usually in the sleaze/glam category) and occasionally have guests. Mary's Blood was on a couple of months back:

The album is up for preorder at Tower and Disk Union and CD Japan and probably most other places you'd care to look (it's on Avex after all).

So now I'm curious who actually is under the mask. Tongue

Looks kinda awkward playing in that suit.
Feel free to request a translation here. And check out my previous work in this section.
Please bear it mind I'm always busy though and it may take a while!

Oh for god’s sake. I actually watched that Mary’s Blood video a while back (it was on my recommended YouTube videos somehow) and fastforwarded it as soon as these guys came on...thinking “what kind of contrived bullshit is this? Just, no”.

And of course it *is* contrived...reeks of an Avex thrown-together project...but...

I like the triple-harmony vocals, and the guy can play guitar.

I’m really not into Japanese robot fetishism at all, and the massive stench of gimmickry is not great, but I will definitely at least check out the album trailer when it comes out. Hmm.

Where to start?

Well, here's another MV they posted back in January, before they added the singers.

OK, I wonder if they saw Daft Punk and said "we can do better than those helmets", and if Daft Punk will be jealous when they see this?

The robobunny can play, yes.

I like the 2nd song's guitarwork, but the first song's the first song's triple harmonies are really good.

...but overall, it's super gimmicky. Worse than Band Maid, even.

OMG, there's a somewhat WTF intro video with English captions:

Quote:My name is Ediee Ironbunny. I am a cyborg guitarist who came from the future, the year 2300, through time traveling. Unfortunately, in the era where I was, rock music had disappeared long ago, and guitarists like us became almost like endangered species. That's why I decided to get up and say, Okay! Let's go back to the past and make a rock hit song to change the history! Rock music is not about the visuals. It's not such a nonsense telling us what to wear like the long hair or the leather boots. Rock music is about expressing the urge you felt from the life that you lived and passing the impulses from people to people. Everyone has a living history. That's why anyone can rock! Rock&Roll!

Is he slagging on visual kei? And if it's not about the visuals, why the costume? ROFL ROFL ROFL

Good lord.

I'm sure many of us have wondered what a trio of small Japanese girls might sound like, harmonising over The Number of the Beast...what? you haven't?

oh well, here it is anyway.

Brides of Lucifer from Belgium does kind of the same thing with a big female choir singing metal classics. You're not familiar with how badly the sting can be taken out of 'Painkiller' until you've heard them do it. I sometimes have the idea that they're supposed to be a performance act rather than a serious band though.

Considering the arrangement is normally a lot more than one guitar and vocals, I don't think it was bad.

Don't want an album of that, but...
