[Heavy/Doom Metal] Cloud Forest
#1
Cloud Forest is a long-running Osaka band that was originally set up by the former bassist and guitarist of Belladonna when that band broke up in 1992. As the band’s been around for a while, they’re have been plenty of member changes in the intervening time, but those two have stuck it out. Full current line-up:

Kiyoshi Utsunomiya - Bass (also Jesus, Kouichi Ogawa, ex-Belladonna, Baroque, ex-Muthas Pride (live), ex-Aggressive, ex-Crystal Dew, ex-Leo, ex-Oil, ex-The Whens)

Etsu - Guitars (ex-Belladonna, Black Heep, ex-Head Eraser, ex-Jam)

Richi Maeda - Keyboards

K. Juno - Vocals

Hideyuki Yamagata - Drums

They’re odd as they’re original vocalists were all male, but they switched to a female vocalist in 2010 - something to watch out for if you’re getting the CD’s, as she’s on the last one only.

Style is slightly retro HM/HR, though they can mix in doomy stuff, power metal and even progressive elements to vary things up at times. Lyrics seem mostly English but KJ’s English is actually pretty decent by the sound of it. No annoying affectations either. Guitar and Bass are as competent as you’d expect from veterans of this experience, though there’s plenty of nice keyboard work on their later stuff too (Richi there is the other female member and she does some backing vocals too).

They haven’t been too prolific, but there’s some stuff still out there. Three full length albums, an EP and a demo. A quick Google found the last album (with Juno) at SA Music and Amazon Japan. There’s also a copy of their self-named first album up at Discogs. (not from Kupiku either!)

Fun fact: Drummer seems the ‘hot seat’ at this band, as they’ve has six or so. They even had Ebony Eyes Hideyuki Iwasaki there for a couple of years.

There’s some live video up (though no MV’s or recorded stuff). These are all with the current members though, minus the drummer (who changed again!):

I need to find some of their early albums to familiarize myself with these guys. I'm sure I'll like them, it's basically a fusion of Jesus and Belladonna, both of which were really good bands, and I've heard good things about Cloud Forest as well.

I had no idea what to expect with this band because my first experience was their mid era album Karma, but I really dislike the vocalist they had during that time. Fast forward to their 2012 album Rebirth and they've got an excellent singer now. The band's style is a really pleasant heavy/doom metal with a kinda classic feel. Easily one of the better Japanese doom metal bands I've heard. I've had their 2012 album for a few days now, I'd certainly recommend it.

What was he like then? I couldn't find and video. It was the Jesus guy on the first album, who I presume is OK, from 'Le Dernier Slow''s reception Wink

The Jesus singer won't blow anyone away with his skill, but he's adequate and effective at least, so I expect him to be fine on Cloud Forest's debut. The second guy is out of key and just doesn't sound very pleasant to me, and despite ample instrumental skill in the band he kinda holds them back on Karma. For their third singer the band switched to a lady and she's pretty solid across the board.

He kinda sounds like Satoru Kimura from Shella if you've heard them, but more awkward.

For people wondering what the band sounds like in studio. Kinda Pagan Altar-ish heavy/doom with a more gifted singer:

Nah it's okay, we just didn't have any tags with "doom" in them for this section before. I just didn't want to shuffle these guys into the extreme metal section so Painkiller added the tag for me. Tongue Anything is better than their power metal tag over at M-A.
