[Hardcore] Gastunk
#1
(I really hope there isn't a Gastunk thread yet, the search function is acting up so I can't look.)

So how do y'all guys like Gastunk? For me, it's one of my all time favorite bands. It was a bit hard to put them in a category - which I don't like doing anyway - since they started as a punk band but evolved into hard rock later on.

Early stuff:

To me, their best album is Under the Sun. They released a Japanese version, with surreal cover art, and a version for the West, half in English, half in Japanese, with pretty much the most badass cover art ever:

This is a ballad from the Japanese version:

I think the English versions worked pretty well, Baki has a good pronounciation, and I'm baffled they didn't get more succes in the West because of this brilliant album.

I particularly like hardcore-era of early Gastunk (1984-07-07  Shibuya Yaneura Live). Is this record without Baki?

Not overly familiar with them, but I've enjoyed what I have heard from them, got a couple albums in my library, I just don't remember to check it out again lol.

This would also be my first time hearing of Gastunk. I liked what I heard, despite not being into punk as much as a few of the members who replied before me. Thanks for the recommendation!

The vocals really aren't my thing, but there's some pretty cool riff work going on. Especially on 'Leather Ship'. Isn't one of the members of Gastunk involved with Doom these days?

Yeah, the drummer, Pazz. Actually he joined Doom way back in the early 90s after their first drummer left. He's definitely a very talented guy.
Occasionally, I write music reviews.

Baby and Baki played in a band called The Execute whose drummer (Euro) I really like, his side-project Quest Object Project is one of my favorite demo-only bands, just a really excellent heavy/speed metal effort from guys who were usually punk musicians. That's the main thing that keeps reminding me to check out Gastunk further is just the sheer talent linked through bands related to Gastunk's members.

Baby is pretty much one of the best bass players out there, just listen to his lines on songs like Husk. That's why they changed from punk to hard rock, I think - they had too much fucking talent to play punk! Big Grin
