[Gothic/Symphonic] 冰霜之淚 / Frost Tears
#1
冰霜之淚, Frost Tears for us western scum, is a Taiwanese band that straddles the line between gothic metal, progressive metal and symphonic power metal, with Melody Wang's vocals being the only factor that pushes them towards any of those three genres, goth to be exact. Personally, I find their song structures and chord sequences to be too creative to lump them in with the average female-fronted metal crowd. The first two After Forever albums are a reasonably apt point of reference, but from listening to their first (and so far only, as far as I can tell) full-length '九章' from 2014, it's quite obvious that their classical and folk influences are vastly different from those of similarly-styled European bands. Chih-chia Chen can be quite a creative guitarist and bassist at times.

This band more or less crossed my path due to listening to Rakshasa, as they appear to have the same booking agency in Japan and ended up in my recommended videos as a result. I have to admit that their album intrigued me more than the songs they chose for the videos, but I'll post a few below for reference. If you are curious about more, all of their releases appear to be on Spotify under their Taiwanese name.

And for those craving something heavier:

If you can't get enough of me giving my opinions without having asked for it, you can read more of it on my Kevy Metal webzine.
